PLAY POKER ONLINE - INTRODUCTION
The introduction to Texas Holdem strategy begins on the poker strategy introduction page, which along with the online poker hub page acts as the focal point of the site. If you're looking to learn how to play poker, or look for any form of poker advice, these are the pages where you can start off on a good introduction. You can be sure that famous poker players such as Phil Ivey and Doyle Brunson once started off by studying the fundamentals of poker from scratch.
These hub pages create your starting points to either move into the different Texas Holdem strategy subjects, or to get you a comprehensive directory of poker related websites and valuable articles covering all aspects of poker and different game types. In fact, my aim is to deliver everything you need to play poker successfully and enjoy your time while playing. If you're already clued up on the different aspects of playing online, you might get some value from the new poker promotions page.
Most of the articles on our site apply if you're playing online or live poker. Playing online has a number of benefits, but of course playing live might get you some encounters with colourful (or sometimes annoying) characters. You can read about some of the different types of player you'll meet in live poker games. Watching poker on TV will give you some excellent insights to how the professionals play, where you know all the cards and can try to anticipate what's going to happen in any hand.
This is a good place to mention the benefits you can get from joining a good poker school. There are a number of poker schools available online which deliver exceptional quality information and which you can use as an additional learning resource.
Currently leading the field is the PokerStrategy com poker school, who in addition to delivering high quality strategy material also bring you valuable poker strategy bonus offers which in a number of cases give you better value bonuses than if you'd gone to the poker rooms directly - plus they'll give you a free $50 + $100 starting capital by completing the pokerstrategy quiz. Read the articles, study the videos, pass the quiz and play poker with the free poker strategy bonus starting bankroll.
On this page you'll find a number of links to basic and advanced articles which aim to cover as many strategy subjects as possible. We start from a total beginner perspective - taking a look at the reasons why poker is such a popular game, and the benefits you'll get from playing online versus playing live. If you want to get an easy start without risking any cash while you're learning, then playing free poker is a good way to get an introduction to the various elements of the game.
Now you can jump straight to the online poker page which covers all areas with valuable links to external websites or internally within this site - or alternatively go straight to the poker strategy hub page, which presents a summary of the different strategy subjects as a starting point to reading more detailed strategy articles split out under basic and advanced poker strategy headings. It's good to understand the different types of poker websites, inluding why they exist and how they work. This will help you get the best from any information you find outside of this site.
When you start investigating which poker rooms offer the best playing experience, you'll quickly see that many operate on shared poker networks. One or two operate on their own proprietary network, but often you could be playing at different rooms but against the same player base and for the same prizes. The poker rooms themselves are where the action takes place. Pokerstars are one of the most famous, but there are dozens to choose from.
Poker tournaments are exceptionally popular, and it's a certainty that you'll want to play in a tournament at some point. Poker tournaments need a special approach from a strategy perpective, although many of the basic poker strategy principles still apply.
Poker betting is a crucial area to understand - how to bet and when, and the types of games that determine maximum and minimum bet amounts. Determining the player types that you're competing against is another area which is worth studying carefully, as is paying attention to any poker tells that might be given off by opponents - the clues given away by subconscious body movements.
There are a number of important mathematical elements of poker which all successful players fully understand. It's worth taking time to study the art of calculating pot odds, or you can take a short cut and use one of the excellent poker odds calculators which are freely available.
Starting hand selection is an important skill which you'll need to learn. You can find some excellent resources to help on the starting hands page which covers the 10 best and 10 worst Texas Holdem hands, and then takes you further into the strategies for playing pairs.
One of the great and potentially misused poker skills is the art of bluffing - an attempt to mislead your opponents which can be hugely effective if used carefully and at the right time - and bluffing is tied also to the art of folding hands at the right time. The new poker game variant of Rush Poker might have some profound impacts on your folding dynamics if you're a recreational type player.
Establishing a table image with appropriate folding can open opportunities to bluff successfully in later hands, and appropriate table selection to suit your skill level and style will also help you in the potential to mislead opponents. You'll benefit from understanding the other deceptive art of slow playing hands - luring your opponents into believing you have a weak hand when you do actually have a strong one.
Once you have a good understanding of the basics such as rules, starting hands, bluffing and folding skills - the next major strategy to master is that of table position. Your poker position at the table is extremely important and changes throughout the game as the dealer changes. Using your position effectively to determine your betting actions will help maximise winnings and limit losses, and raising appropriately at the right times will help increase your chances.
Playing blinds is a position which you'll have to handle a number of times during a game. This can have a major impact on cash wins or losses, and blinds need to be played carefully.
Although playing effective poker strategy vastly improves your chances of success, luck does also play a part. Losing a hand which you should win in most normal cases is called a bad beat and handling this correctly when it happens to you can prevent some costly play afterwards.
It'll be valuable for you to gain an understanding of how poker software operates, and the different types of software you'll encounter.
This is a good time to talk about etiquette at the table. There are certain well known conventions on how you should present yourself at the table. Using insults is one questionable area of poker that's frowned upon, and may well alienate you from your opponents.
It's worth keeping an eye open for new developments. Although using technology that's well tried and trusted now, both mobile and 3d poker are continuing to grow in popularity, with perhaps mobile poker having the greatest potential to bring the game to a wider number of players in future.
